khaNDa-7 Summary

This khanda was mostly narrated by RRiShi kashyapa to diti.

This khaNDa describes the vighnarAja rUpa of gaNesha.

diti was unhappy because viShNu had killed her sons hiraNyakashipu and hiraNyAkSha. She reached out to kashyapa for revenge. She did his sevA. After
RRiShi kashyapa was pleased by her, she asked him for a son who will kill indra. kashyapa got scared seeing him being the adharmA kAraNa and remembered gaNesha. He suggested her a gaNesha vrata which will give her such a child. There were certain strict rules for the vrata. nArada told indra of the discourse between diti and kashyapa. The scared indra remembered gaNesha and thought it is better to do sevA to diti. indra went to diti and did her sevA. Completion of 9 months did not delivery the child. indra was tensed and still performed her sevA. A vighna was created by gaNesha prasAda. After one year of pregnancy, diti’s vrata rule got broken in her sleep. indra was joyful and entered her udara. He cut her garbha into 7x7=49 pieces.

The garbha was divya due to the vrata of gaNesha and it explained indra that they should befriend because they are brothers indeed. indra realized his mistake and came out of garbha. Soon, diti woke up and realized the vrata broken and gave brith to 49 sons. Surprised diti doubted the vrata was for 1 child, where did 49 children came from. She asked indra who was near. indra honestly answered the truth, for which diti forgave him. Now, indra went to his loka and diti was again sad.

The sad diti again approached kashyapa and asked the reason for her pain. kashyapa exaplained her that duHkha and moha are inherent to sansAra as explained in shAstra s and happiness for a pApi is inpersistent as explained in veda. daityAH are said to be mRRityuyutAH Hence, she should give up her mamatA. diti decided to give up mamatA and asked him the way for to achieve shanti. kashyapa suggests her to bhaja gajAnana. He begins to describe a story of shiva and pArvatI. Once upon a time, shiva was disappointed that pArvatI went to dakShAdhvara without his permission. Hence, he decided to worship gaNesha by himself. pArvatI, in order to please shiva did his sevA, but shiva did not please. pAvatI got angry and decided to die. She remembered gaNesha, who intuitioned her that tapas can make you achieve you anything. She again, started her tapa for shiva but still, he was not pleased. Then devi did tapa for gaNesha following the ekAkSharavidhAna. After some time, shiva ‘s mind got changed. devi made a soil idol of gaNesha on shrAvaNa shukla chaturthi and was continuously workshipping gaNesha. She was continously reciting the mantra was a purashcharaNa. shiva ‘s mind changed and he decided to forgive pArvatI. First, shiva presented himself like a brahmachAri and criticised shiva, to which pArvatI resisted. Then, shiva showed his original rUpa and asked here vara. Joyful pArvatI, asked him to request dakSha for marriage. That day was bhAdrI shukla chaturthI, when they did a traditional pUjA.

shiva remembered gaNesha and went to daksha in the form of a vipra. There, he presented nAnAkalAH. dakSha was pleased, and shiva immediately requested pArvatI. At first, dakSha was sorrowful, but jaganmayI explained him that you should give umA to him, as he is shiva in disguise. shiva and pArvatI were later married and had skanda. skanda workshipped gaNesha and later killed tAraka.

With these series of evernts, pArvatI felt dhanya. Now, she had shiva with her. Form her laughter, originated a puruSha who was handsome and looked like a mountain. pArvatI with her friends was surprised and interrogated the person. The person said he was originated from her laughter, asked her for Aj~nyA. मया मानः कृतः पूर्णः तस्मात् त्वं निर्गतः स्वयम् । ममनामा भवस्वाद्य पुत्र मानपरायणः ॥. Thus, he was named as mama. She advised him to worship gaNesha, who will give you everything. She gave him the ShaDakShara mantra with proper vidhi. She left mama and shaMbara arrived there who was sent by kAla. mama asked shaMbara ‘s reason for arrival. shaMbara said he had come to give him nAnAvidyAH. shaMbara gave him AsurI vidhyAH. mama was delightful and asked him to teach him. shaMbara advised him to workship gaNesha with the mantra and ask the rule of brahmANDa. mama did tapa for gaNesha and asked for rule of world.
gaNesha was disappointed, and said that he will get everything, but whatever you have asked is really unfavourable.

mama returned to shaMbara and shaMbara offered him his daughter mohinI for marriage. mama was made as daityAdhIsha by shukrAchArya. He appointed pretaH, kAlaH, kalApaH, kAlajit and dharmahA as his pradhAnAH. mama had two sons: dharma and adharma. mama asked shukra for ruling brahmANDa. shukra agreed on his capabilities due to the vara given by gaNesha. With all daityAH, he attacked svargaH.

A dreadful war happened between surAH and adurAHA, where asurAHA won and became brahmANDapatiH. The rule of mama was miserable.

Despairing devatAH started thinking of ways to kill mama. vishNu suggested to worship gaNesha. devatAH agreed with him and did tapa for pleasing gaNesha. gaNesha appeared in front of them at madhyAhna of bhAdrapada shukla chaturthI. devatAH do stuti and ask him to kill mama. Some rakShaka of mama had seen this happening and reported this to mama. nArada went to gaNesha and requested him to kill mama. gaNesha and nArada went to mama. nArada explained mama to get in sharaNa of gaNesha or else he will be killed. Meanwhile, a asharIriNI sound was heard मा गर्व कुरु दैत्येंद्र नारदाज्ञावशो भव ॥ नोचेद्विघ्नपतिः क्रुद्धस्त्वां हनिष्यति निश्चितम् । अतस्तं शरणं गच्छ सर्वसिद्धिप्रदायकम् ॥ shukra also suggested him the same. However, mama consdiered death as yashaskaraM and sharaNa to shatru is not suitable. nArada explains him the gaNesha tattva. mama convinced by his explaination, udnerstands that gaNesha is brahmarUpa and following him will be better. mama advised his ministers and sons to follow whatever nArada explained. But, the ministers and sons decided to war against devatAH. The devatAH got terrifed in the war, but gaNesha told them not to worry. gaNesha threw a kamalaH which was in hand. The kamala fell in the senA of daityAH. The suvAsa of kamala spread which killed the daityAH, including his five ministers. The angry kamala approached mama, and its smell gave him mUrchChA. After half day, he woke up and saw kamala near him. Scared, he joined hands and did stuti of kamala. kamala was pleased and went back to hand of gaNesha. With joy, mama did stuti of gaNapati. gaNesha was pleased and asked him want he wanted. mama asked for bhakti and a place to rule. gaNesha said him to stay where first gaNeshasya pUjana or his smaraNa does not happen. Also, he should protect the devotees of gaNesha. In this way, mamAsura achieved shanti and went back to pAtAla. devatAH were also happy and did stuti of gaNesha. devatAH created a gaNesha idol in the middle of himAlaya on bhAdrapada shukla chaturthI.

kashyapa explained diti that there are several such stories of vighnarAja which cannot he is not even capable of narrating. Once, the brahma of several vishva did tapa for gaNesha. After a long period, gaNesha appeard in front of them in the form of viShNu. All brahmaNaH did stuti of viShNurUpigaNesha and obtained vara from him.

Once, viShvaksena asked viShNu what can get him shanti. viShNu explained him the gaNesha tattva and gave him a RRik mantra. viShvaksena pleased gaNesha with the mantra, and gaNesha appeared to him with lakShmI. He did stuti of gaNesha and realized that gaNesha and viShNu are same.

Once, a rAkShasaH named dharmaghna had son named yaj~nadhru~g. He pleased shiva with pa~nchAksharI and got the boon for ruling brahmANDaH. He wished to kill viShNu. Since viShNuH is yaj~naH, stopping yaj~nyAH will kill viShNuH. viShNu hungry with no yaj~nyAH started tapa for gaNesha using the ekAkSharavidhAnaH. After pleasing shUrpakarNa, he did his stuti and asked to kill _yaj~nyadhru~g.

Once, in mAghamAsa when sUrya was in makara, devatAH went to prayAga for snAna. They worshipped OMkAragaNanAtha there. But they also saw dattAtreya worshipping gaNesha. They asked him several questions about the gaNesha tattva, which is titled as dattagItA, and it available as another blog.

Convinced with the gaNeshacharitra, diti did tapa for gaNesha. She pleased him, did his stuti and asked him to be born as her child. Returning back to home, kashyapa was happy on hearing her story.

Once in madhyAhna of mAgha shukla chaturthI, gaNesha appeared from an idol infront of diti, and was shining like infinite suns. Scared diti remembered her guru kashyapa, due to which gaNesha showed a saumyarUpa. The showed a bAlarUpa and said “I am your son due to the vara you have obtained”. The child had 4 hands and was having several signs of gaNapati. kashyapa was glad to see gaNesha. The nAmakarma of child was organized on his 12th day. The brahmaNAH said this child is going to settle devaH in svarga, narAH to pRRithvi and asurAH to pAtAla, hence he should be named chaturbhujaH.

After two years, devaH attacked asurAH, where they wanted to completely remove arurAH from vishva. The terrified asurAH went to diti for help. Seeing this, chaturbhuja was angry and threw charka to kill devAH. Scared devaAH left pAtAla, and did stuti of gaNesha. gaNesha advised them not to kill the daityAH who stay in pAtAla.

After long time, daityAH decided to conquer svarga. diti_advised them not to do. _dtiti started workshipping gaNesha leaving the side for her sons. Similarly, aditi left the side of devAH and worshipped her son gaNesha. They left the daiva form of worship. The sakAma yathAvishi karma is here called as AsurI worship. The opposite goes for daiva.
